Fluvius starts grid reinforcement in Heusden-Zolder: 15 kilometres of new power cables

In Heusden-Zolder in Limburg, grid company Fluvius has started an extensive reinforcement of the electricity grid. In the coming months, contractor Unit-T and subcontractor MSI Group will lay 15 kilometres of new electricity cables there. The reason is the energy transition: the works will prepare the local electricity grid for the arrival of many more electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pumps. The first spade was dug on 13 January in Bouwveldsteeg.

25 streets with 2 teams

Unit-T and MSI Group will start work with 2 ploughs at the same time to make enough speed. A total of 25 streets will be worked on until April. The works will be spread out with minimal disruption. All residents will be informed before the start of the works.

The utility works will last until mid-April, depending of course on weather conditions. Work will be carried out in: Bouwveldsteeg, Reeënlaan, Ubbersel, 't Venneke, Michel Scheperslaan, Kleuterweg, Halhei, Kooidries, Breugellaan, Voortstraat, Kerkebosstraat, Laambroekstraat, Pastoor Sakstraat, Schaapsweg, Molenstraat, Reigerslaan, Kruiskapelstraat, Koerselsebaan, Kruiswegstraat, Oude Baan, Belikstraat, Ubbelstraat, Toekomststraat, Inakker and in Heuvelstraat.

Preparing for the future

Strengthening low-voltage grids - which reach into homes, flats and small businesses - is a crucial part of Fluvius' investment plan. By 2032, Fluvius aims to proactively address 40 per cent of low-voltage grids and about half of low-voltage cabins.

The order of implementation will be determined on the basis of analyses and simulations of grid load and expected evolution. After consultation with all Flemish cities and municipalities, Fluvius develops municipal low-voltage plans, coordinated with works of other utilities. For implementation, Fluvius works together with specialised contractors.
