In collaboration with the city of Tienen, Fluvius is planning a road and sewerage project in Van Audenhovestraat, Broedersblok and Bosveldstraat in Hakendover, a borough of Tienen. With these works, both partners want to structurally tackle flooding in the village, better protect the area against drought and improve the quality of life. If everything goes according to plan, the works will start in the autumn of 2027.

Separate sewers and maximum softening

Central to the project is the construction of a separate sewer system. Rainwater will be collected, buffered and infiltrated into the soil as much as possible. The public space will also be softened as much as possible. This reduces the risk of flooding and strengthens local groundwater reserves.

Safe and green streetscape

The new road design aims at a safe, green and pleasant streetscape for all road users. Taking into account the limited traffic intensity and a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h, the design will focus on both traffic safety and quality of life.

Clean watercourses

Today, a considerable waste load still ends up in the Vissengracht near the Broedersblok, which flows further downstream into the Ramshovenbeek. Thanks to the construction of the separate sewer system, this discharge will be completely eliminated. This project thus makes an important contribution to improved water quality in local watercourses.

Subsidy for measures on private property

The works fit within the wider Resilient Water Landscape project 'Wissenbos catchment area'. Through this project, residents are encouraged to take measures on their own property as well, such as building a wadi or infiltration zone, softening parts of the garden or installing a rain barrel. The city of Tienen worked out a subsidy scheme for this together with the province of Flemish Brabant.

Investment and planning

The total cost of the project is €5.57 million (excluding VAT). Of this, the city of Tienen will bear 1.83 million euro (excl. VAT). Fluvius submitted a grant application to the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) to support the reduction targets around water management and efficient water use. VMM granted a subsidy and will thus finance 75% of the sewerage works.

The works are scheduled to start in autumn 2027. Implementation will be done in phases, with planned completion in 2029.

On Tuesday 28 April '26, residents were given more explanations during an information moment. The turnout was great and some comments were made. The partners are now looking at how to take this further.
