From 1 July 2025, Fluvius will take over full management of the public sewerage network in Mesen. The municipal council of Belgium's smallest town - with 1 075 inhabitants - recently decided to join the Fluvius West association for the sewerage activity. By doing so, the city transfers both the ownership, management and administration of its sewerage infrastructure to Fluvius.

As the largest municipal sewerage manager in Flanders, Fluvius is already active in 82 cities and municipalities. By joining, Mesen benefits from the highly organised management, expertise and solidarity mechanism between the member authorities. Other partners also showed interest in Mesen's sewerage network, but the choice finally fell on Fluvius because of its broad experience and the shared commitment between member local authorities.

"We are delighted that Mesen is joining Fluvius. For years we have been a reliable partner, characterised by successful and customer-oriented cooperation. As Fluvius, we are strongly committed to preparing for the future also in the field of climate adaptation and to realise the expectations around waste and rain water of the city of Messines in close cooperation with them."
Marc Deberdt, regional manager Fluvius

Reliable service for residents

Little will change for residents: they will continue to count on reliable service. The city can count on a personal approach, with contact persons ready to answer any question. The administrative workload for the city administration decreases, creating space for other priorities. Ongoing projects, such as the planned reconstruction of Nieuw-Zeelanderstraat, will be reviewed in consultation with the city.

"With this accession, Mesen is consciously opting for a future-oriented, efficient and affordable waste and stormwater management policy. By cooperating with Fluvius, the city can count on economies of scale, administrative simplification and more coordinated investments."
Sandy Evrard, mayor Mesen

Together towards clean water and sustainable infrastructureBy joining Fluvius West, Mesen is helping to put its weight behind a sustainable, professional and affordable approach to sewerage policy. Fluvius continues to invest in a modern and climate-robust infrastructure, thus contributing to better water quality in Flanders.
