The number of reports of voltage problems and inverter failures has fallen sharply in recent years. Whilst Fluvius recorded more than 5,100 complaints in 2023, that figure fell to around 2,770 in 2024. In 2025, this decline continued to around 2,200 complaints, and the initial figures for 2026 also confirm the positive trend, with 45% fewer complaints during the same period of the year.

Not only is the total number of complaints falling, but the typical peaks during the summer months are also becoming less pronounced. This points to a structural improvement in the quality of the voltage on the electricity grid. Moreover, we are not only seeing this trend in the complaints register: it is independently confirmed by the trends in the digital meter data that the network operator analyses across its systems.

Targeted approach and investments are paying off

According to Fluvius, this trend is the result of a targeted approach on several fronts. The grid operator has been investing for several years in strengthening the electricity grid, including by installing additional substations – totalling 1,133 for 2024 and 2025 combined – and expanding grid capacity. These measures often require a bespoke local approach and involve consultation with local authorities, for example to find suitable locations for new substations. Good cooperation with local authorities remains essential in this regard, and members of the public and other local stakeholders can also help by contributing constructive ideas on possible locations and solutions.

At the same time, voltage problems are being detected and addressed more quickly, partly thanks to the use of digital meter data and new analysis tools.

Artificial intelligence is also playing an increasingly important role. Fluvius is developing applications that help to better detect and even predict voltage problems, enabling the network operator to set the right priorities and make the right investments.

“The figures clearly show that our approach is working,” says Raf Bellers, Director of Grid Management. “By combining targeted investments with strong regional operations and the smart use of data, we are gradually improving the quality of the electricity grid.”

Fluvius emphasises that further efforts are still needed. The growth in solar panels and increasing electrification continue to pose challenges for the grid, meaning that additional investments – as set out in Fluvius’s Investment Plan – and close cooperation with local authorities remain essential.
