Fluvius tracks down power line malfunctions with new "measuring vans"

Fluvius has just commissioned four new "measuring vans". These are special vans equipped with the latest technological innovations to detect defects in underground electricity cables. The new measurement vans are an important step in the renewal of the grid operator's measurement fleet, which consists of 13 such vans and is available 24/7. They help Fluvius to keep the reliability of the underground electricity network at a high level, even when building the networks for tomorrow.
It works like this: if there is a power cut somewhere in Flanders, and Fluvius' technicians determine that it is caused by a defective underground electricity cable, one of the measuring vans is called in. It is packed with equipment to measure from the street or pavement exactly where the defect or damage is. This allows targeted digging to restore the power supply as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption.
The new measuring vehicles incorporate the latest digital technologies that support the work of specialised operators through a lot of instruments and measuring equipment. For example, they can work with higher voltages to detect cable faults at longer distances. The operator can also control the measuring trolley remotely via a smartphone. This way, it can remotely start a measurement while following the route of an underground cable outside.
Testing and training process crucial
The new measurement trucks are a major upgrade in Fluvius' measurement fleet. They were carefully tested, a process that took several months. This thorough testing process, in which all systems were connected, checked and optimised, was essential to ensure that the trolleys are reliable and of the highest quality.
Paul Segers, Technologist at Fluvius: "The new cable measuring trolleys can work with higher voltages, and they can detect cable faults at longer distances. Computer operation facilitates the whole process, but of course it is still human work. Our specialised operators followed a two-day practical training course so that they can make optimal use of the new technology."
All measuring trolleys renewed step by step
The implementation of these renewed measuring cars is part of a phased renewal plan. In the coming years, Fluvius' other nine measuring vans will also be upgraded to further improve the reliability and efficiency of the measuring fleet. The phased approach ensures that the operation of the measurement vehicles will always remain operational.
With this upgrade, Fluvius is not only taking an important step in improving its technology, but also in ensuring operator safety and network management quality. The first four wagons are now operational and are driving across Flanders to quickly and efficiently detect and resolve faults in the electricity grid.
