Fluvius to take over management of the municipal sewerage system in Spiere-Helkijn

Residents of Spiere-Helkijn who wish to connect to the sewerage system or report a blockage in the street can contact Fluvius from tomorrow (1 July 2026). To this end, Spiere-Helkijn is joining Fluvius West for the management, maintenance and further expansion of the municipal sewerage infrastructure. In doing so, it has chosen a partner with the necessary expertise, scale and investment capacity to tackle the challenges of modern water management.

The management of sewerage and water infrastructure is becoming increasingly complex. New regulations, technical requirements and administrative obligations demand an ever-greater commitment from local authorities. By working with Fluvius, Spiere-Helkijn can focus more closely on its core tasks, whilst sewerage management is entrusted to a specialist partner.

“Due to the increasing complexity of sewerage regulations and our need to focus on core tasks such as activation policy and service provision, we wish to outsource the management of sewers, dykes and water treatment plants. In Fluvius, we have found a reliable partner to take these tasks off our hands. The decisive factor is that we now have a single point of contact for both the energy and sewerage networks.”
Mayor Mathias Goos

A single point of contact for utility infrastructure

The partnership simplifies monitoring and provides a single, clear point of contact for various utility infrastructures. As Fluvius is already responsible for the electricity and gas networks, the partnership is being further integrated.

Little will change for residents. Service provision remains guaranteed and the council will continue to be closely involved in investments and projects.

Resilient water management

Fluvius and Spiere-Helkijn will continue to invest jointly in a high-performance sewerage network that addresses the challenges of today and tomorrow. The focus is on water quality, climate adaptation and minimising the impact of flooding and drought.

Spiere-Helkijn thus joins a growing group of local authorities that have entrusted their sewerage management to Fluvius. In the middle of last year and early this year, Mesen, Avelgem, Heuvelland, Lo-Reninge and Poperinge also made the same choice. With Spiere-Helkijn’s accession, Fluvius is now responsible for managing the municipal sewerage network in almost one in three Flemish towns and municipalities.
