Fluvius reaches the milestone of one million public LED lights in Flanders
More than eight in ten public lighting points now use LED

Harelbeke, 26 October 2026 – Fluvius has reached the milestone of one million public LED lights in Flanders. More than eight in ten public lighting points managed by Fluvius now use LED technology. Fluvius manages over 1.2 million lighting points and, where local authorities request it, Fluvius will complete the full switch-over by the end of 2028.
The partial switch to LED had already delivered energy savings of almost 43 per cent by the end of 2025, amounting to 181 GWh – equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of 51,824 households. LED lighting also lasts much longer than traditional street lighting. With interactive LED lighting, local authorities, in consultation with Fluvius, can control public lighting in a targeted manner and determine where and when lights are switched on, dimmed or switched off.
Almost 400,000 additional LED lamps in two and a half years
In April 2024, Fluvius reached the 600,000 LED lamp mark. Today, the total stands at one million. In around two-and-a-half years, therefore, nearly 400,000 LED street lights have been added. This places Flanders among the European frontrunners in the switch to energy-efficient public lighting.
“One million LED lamps is much more than a symbolic milestone. More than eight out of ten public lighting points that we manage are now powered by LED. We achieved this result together with the Flemish cities and municipalities. We are on track to complete the switch-over by the end of 2028, thereby continuing to build an energy-efficient and future-proof public lighting network.” Tom Ceuppens, Director of Customer and Network Operations at Fluvius
Central celebration in Harelbeke
Fluvius will be putting this milestone in the spotlight on Monday 26 October during a press event in Harelbeke, attended by the Flemish Minister for Energy and Climate, Melissa Depraetere, the town council and representatives from Fluvius. At the same time, the milestone of one million LED lamps will be highlighted in Dendermonde, Bornem, Diest and Hamont-Achel.
“This milestone shows that the energy transition is not something for tomorrow. It is happening today, in our streets and neighbourhoods. We are particularly proud that Harelbeke is the central setting for this celebration.” Michaël Vannieuwenhuyze, Mayor of Harelbeke
“Thanks to these investments, we are making our streets both more energy-efficient and safer. We are saving energy without compromising on comfort or safety. That is good for the climate and for the sense of security felt by the people of Harelbeke. During the energy crisis, we still had to switch off the lights to save energy. Now we can leave them on. It proves that investing in the climate is about more than just our emissions. It also makes a real positive difference to people’s lives.” Melissa Depraetere, Flemish Minister for Energy and Climate

Flanders literally in a new light
One million LED lamps is a milestone that every Flemish person sees every day, but rarely notices. That is why Fluvius is marking the switch on 26 October with a striking public campaign in five Flemish cities. In Harelbeke, Dendermonde, Bornem, Diest and Hamont-Achel, temporary messages will appear beneath public LED lamps. In this way, for one evening, Flanders will literally pause to reflect on one of the biggest innovations in public lighting in recent years.
