On Monday 21 September, network operator Fluvius began construction of a new medium-voltage grid between ’t Hooge and Abele in Poperinge. Over a stretch of approximately eight kilometres, Fluvius is upgrading the electricity grid to prepare it for the growing demand for electricity. The investment forms part of a wider programme to upgrade the electricity grid, enabling it to cope with increasing electrification driven by, amongst other things, electric cars, heat pumps and solar panels.

The energy sector is changing rapidly. More households are opting for heat pumps, charging points and solar panels. Businesses, too, are increasingly switching to electric solutions. This evolution calls for a powerful, reliable and future-proof electricity grid.

To meet this demand, Fluvius is installing a new medium-voltage network along Provenseweg, Helleketelweg, Stoppelweg and Trappistenweg. At the same time, Fluvius is installing new low-voltage cables, cables for street lighting and conduit pipes for future utility lines. At various locations, the grid operator is replacing existing cables or reconnecting them.

Fluvius is carrying out the works mainly on verges and cobbled sections. Where necessary, the network operator is digging trenches. To cross roads, cycle paths and the Hipshoekbeek stream, Fluvius is using guided drilling, thereby minimising the impact on the surrounding area. Once the work is complete, the network operator will restore all affected areas to their original condition.

According to Christof Dejaegher, chairman of Fluvius West and mayor of Poperinge, this investment is essential for the region’s future: “The energy transition presents an enormous challenge: we are preparing our networks for a world that is becoming increasingly electrified. This new connection is a fine example of that. We are investing today in the networks of tomorrow, so that households, businesses and local authorities can continue to grow in the future and can rely on a reliable energy grid.”
