Fluvius gives power grid in Asse major upgrade

Just about all utility lines in the centre of Asse are currently undergoing a thorough overhaul. As part of the energy transition, network company Fluvius is taking advantage of these works to strengthen Asse's electricity network step by step and make it future-proof. The works near the town hall have now been completed. All works in the centre will be completed by early 2026.
One of the main triggers for the utility works in Asse was a series of water leaks in the centre. These are clear symptoms that the local water pipes were in urgent need of renewal. To avoid having to break roads and pavements several times, other utility companies also joined in to renew energy and telecom networks at the same time.
To keep this huge project manageable, Fluvius and water company Farys split the workload between them. Thus, Fluvius will take charge of half of the works along the N9, while Farys will manage the works from Nieuwstraat onwards. This cooperation between utility companies is crucial to minimise disruption for all Assen residents.
Works running as planned
Currently, new pipes are already in place along the N9 between Asse station and the town hall, on both sides of the road. Subsequently, adjacent houses will be connected to the new cables and pipes. From the summer, the works will move to Steenweg, Nieuwstraat, Kalkoven and Nerviërsstraat. With that, everything is right on schedule to be completed by early 2026.
Stronger medium and low voltage and (refurbished) cabins
In line with the planned phasing of the utility works, Fluvius will completely renew and reinforce the medium-voltage electrical grid. Such a grid serves more than a thousand households each time. At the same time, the low-voltage electrical grid will also be reinforced: these are the cables that reach homes. The pieces of 230-volt network are being supplemented everywhere there with stronger 400-volt cables.
These reinforcements are planned for Stationstraat, Weverstraat, Steenweg, Kalkoven, Nerviërsstraat, Nieuwstraat and Edingsesteenweg. Further grid reinforcement works are planned in the wider area around the centre of Asse in the course of 2026, more specifically for the laying of 400-volt cables.
Besides power cables, Fluvius is also tackling several power cabins on the route. The old distribution cabin at Station Square will even be completely replaced. All these efforts ensure that the centre of Asse is ready for energy transition and the arrival of many more electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pumps.
