Fluvius has just submitted an application for planning permission for a new major phase in the continued expansion of the campus on Antonia Wolversstraat in Mechelen, near the Keerdok. In doing so, Fluvius and the city of Mechelen are jointly taking the next step in a long-term collaborative process to gradually develop this strategic site into a high-quality, sustainable and future-oriented campus.

Campus integrates into its surroundings

The Fluvius campus borders the Malinas shopping centre to the north and the Keerdok site to the south. Over the next five years, the network operator’s site will undergo a complete transformation, ultimately integrating into the surrounding area both in terms of landscape and architecture. The ‘look and feel’ of the future buildings has been determined in close consultation with the City of Mechelen, ensuring it fits in with the development of the adjacent Wattland residential area.

Fluvius and the City of Mechelen are working step by step to transform the site so that it no longer stands alone, but becomes part of a broader urban development at this key gateway to Mechelen. The site’s open character is defined by a park area along the River Dijle, which is also freely accessible to residents of Wattland and Mechelen. Furthermore, new crossings for pedestrians and cyclists strengthen the connection between the Keerdok site and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Future-oriented development

Fluvius is building a campus in line with the network operator’s other (future) sites. In practical terms, this means that, once completed, staff will be able to work in a thoughtfully designed campus.

The refurbished office building, with its varied mix of workspaces, is already in full use today. In addition , \u200b an ultra-modern Living Lab, comprising laboratories and multi-purpose rooms for practical training, \u200b will be built in due course . A brand-new Business Centre, complete with meeting rooms and a staff canteen, will facilitate meetings in a pleasant environment. A new warehouse and welding workshop for Fluvius technicians will be housed in a two-storey building. Adjacent to this, ample space will be provided for outdoor storage , and a multi-storey car park for staff will be constructed . \u200b

A strong focus on the climate and nature

The climate and nature are high on Fluvius’s agenda. This is reflected here, amongst other things, in the following initiatives.

Wouter Leyssens, Natuurpunt: “We have been designing sustainable landscape plans for years to support planning applications from architects and healthcare institutions. In doing so, we seek out every opportunity to design outdoor spaces in a climate-resilient and nature-friendly way. We were also involved right from the start of the planning process for the new, ultra-modern Fluvius site in Mechelen. Our expertise contributes to the sustainable development of the green space. This has enabled us to focus on creating a strong green-blue network, preserving valuable native vegetation and tackling undesirable and invasive species such as Japanese knotweed. Through a carefully considered reorganisation of buildings and functions, space is being created along the Dijle for a natural park area that contributes to biodiversity and helps cool the built-up environment.”

Partnership with the City of Mechelen

The City of Mechelen and Fluvius have been working closely together since the start of this project. In doing so, they take full account of both partners’ objectives, developments in the neighbourhood and constraints on the site itself. Fluvius has now submitted the application for the environmental planning permission for this next phase of the campus’s development.

Thanks to this strong collaboration, urban development, mobility, visual quality and economic ambitions have been aligned from the outset. For example, the new warehouse, the outdoor storage area and the guest car park will be fully fenced off for security reasons. Motorised traffic on the campus will be restricted to Fluvius staff, customers and visitors only. Customers can park their vehicles in the customer car park, whilst visitors can use the multi-storey car park.

“It is encouraging to see how Fluvius is further developing this important site in line with the broader urban vision for this area. This is a prominent location at a key access point to Mechelen, so quality is particularly important here. The combination of additional jobs, high visual quality, smart mobility choices and more space for pedestrians and cyclists demonstrates how this development also creates clear added value for the neighbourhood. We want new developments not only to be functional, but also to contribute to a strong and pleasant urban environment. The open character, in particular, makes all the difference here,” said Greet Geypen , alderwoman for Urban Development and Spatial Planning.

Campus Mechelen will remain operational during the works

Campus Mechelen will remain operational at all times whilst this construction project is underway. For this reason, the work will be spread over several years, with a target completion date of late 2032. No building will be demolished until a new alternative is in place.
