Fluvius completes preparatory works for biomethane injection Leiestroom Menen

Grid company Fluvius has finished all preparatory works at waste treatment company Leiestroom in Menen to enable the injection of biomethane. The new plant will soon be able to put up to 1240 m³ per hour of climate-neutral gas on the public gas network. In time, a battery storage facility will also be built on the same site.

From biogas CHP to injection

In the West Flemish town of Menen, a stone's throw from the French border, Leiestroom processes 110 000 tonnes of manure, energy crops and green waste every year. This also generates biogas, which was previously used to generate green electricity. The waste processor plans to switch to biomethane injection during 2026 and, to do so, knocked on the door of biogas specialist BiogasTec for the plant conversion.

"Fluvius did a study for the most efficient connection to the public gas grid. This involved laying a section of gas pipeline to the existing medium-pressure network in Hogeweg," says Ruben Dhondt, customer manager at Fluvius. "At the Ropswalle site, just before the year-end, we built an injection cabin specially designed for biomethane plants. The cabin checks the composition of the supplied gas before it is injected into the gas network. It also adds the specific gas odour at the same time, just as happens with fossil gas."

In time, Leiestroom also plans a flexible battery storage facility at the same site. For this too, Fluvius will commission a new power cabin for safe connection to the grid.

Renewable energy source alongside wind and solar

The injection of biomethane into the gas grid is a developing renewable energy technology. Like power from wind turbines and solar panels, this technique also provides clean energy. By the end of 2025, 10 injection plants were connected to the Flemish gas distribution network. And additional installations are expected in the course of 2026.

Fluvius helps companies safely inject their biomethane into the gas grid. The grid company developed a high-tech injection cabin that meets all requirements and provides the necessary connections to the gas grid.
