Flanders reaches milestone of 1 million solar panel installations

Flanders has reached the milestone of 1 million solar panel installations, accounting for a capacity of almost 7 GW. This marks an important step in the transition to renewable energy. The Flemish government stresses the importance of investing in clean and reliable homegrown energy, such as solar power, and aims to make this renewable energy the cheapest option as well.

With an installed capacity of almost 7 GW of solar energy, Flanders is in the top spot in Europe in terms of solar panels per inhabitant. Minister Depraetere responds with satisfaction: "Solar panels are visible everywhere in the streetscape, both on the roofs of houses and companies. In recent years, the cost price for solar panels has dropped significantly, making them an attractive and profitable investment for the future."

Sign up your solar panels

Frank Vanbrabant, CEO of Fluvius, stresses the importance of timely registration: "The millionth solar panel installation in Flanders is a great milestone in the energy transition. Unfortunately, we see that one in four Flemish people register solar panels too late. If you report on time, you help Fluvius to ensure the reliability and safety of the electricity network. We can then accurately monitor the load and are therefore better able to make the right investments in time."

More sustainable and cheaper energy

To ensure that as many people as possible have access to solar energy, Depraetere is also focusing on apartment buildings and social housing this legislature. "It is important that as many people as possible can benefit from sustainable and cheaper home-grown energy. That is why, through the My Conversion Guidance, I will guide VMEs (Association of Co-owners) in installing solar panel installations on apartment buildings and further commit to installing solar panels on our social housing heritage."

Iwein Goigne, chairman of PV-Vlaanderen, added: "We are proud that more than 1 million Flemish people have already opted for solar panels. This undoubtedly inspires even more families and companies to generate their own electricity. Solar energy is not only a sustainable choice, it also gives a grip on energy costs and offers a better return than a savings account. We look forward to Minister Depraetere's ambitious plans to accelerate the rollout and together reach the 10 GW mark."
