430 additional electricity cabins in Limburg in three years

Fluvius is working hard throughout Flanders to strengthen electricity grids. In the province of Limburg, there is a specific focus on installing additional power cabins. In the past three years, 430 new power cabins have already been built and the pace will remain high in the coming years as well. In 2026, 234 cabins will be added, followed by 214 in 2027 and 154 in 2028.

Networks for tomorrow

The grid reinforcements are necessary because the electricity grid is under increasing strain due to the increase in solar panels, heat pumps and electric vehicle charging stations. By upgrading the grids today, we avoid problems in the future.

The province of Limburg poses a particular challenge in this respect: due to the lower population density, cabins are further apart. This makes them more susceptible to overloading and voltage problems. Therefore, proportionally more power cabins need to be added in that region.

Exactly where and when new cabins will be added depends on several factors, such as available land, permits and the local growth of requests for a heavier connection. And, of course, other works and renewal plans of cities and municipalities to which these works may connect are also taken into account.

Fluvius is in close consultation with all cities and municipalities in Limburg that are actively helping to plan grid reinforcements.

Investment plan

These efforts fit within Fluvius' investment plan. For the low-voltage network, which reaches every home in Flanders, no less than 40% of the cables and 1 in 3 electricity cabins must be upgraded by 2033. And the same also applies to the upper medium-voltage networks.
